NOVOSIBIRSK, January 12, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent - Sibir) - The fire in the Sibirskaya mine is no longer dangerous, but the firefighters fail so far to completely extinguish it, RIA Novosti was told on Monday in the Department of Civil Defence and Emergency Situations of the Kemerovo Region (Siberia).

Having referred to the rescuers who take part in extinguishing the fire, the Emergencies Department spokesman said that it would hardly be possible to do with the fire on Monday, because the coal in the strata continues to smoulder.

"In general it is difficult to put out fire in coal on the surface, but under the ground it is much more difficult," said the spokesman.

The fire which broke out after the methane explosion is blazing for the third day now.

After the fire will be extinguished and the mine aired, members of the state commission and the inspectors of the prosecutor's office who are investigating into the causes of the incident, will go into the mine to examine the place of the incident.

The explosion of methane and the consequent fire in the Sibirskaya mine killed five miners and injured sixteen.
