IRANIAN CITIZENS DETAINED IN AN ATTEMPT TO ILLEGALLY LEAVE RUSSIA FOR JAPAN

MOSCOW, January 12, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Three Iranian citizens, who tried to illegally leave Russia for Japan, were detained by frontier guards in the Russian Far Eastern port of Vanino.

As RIA Novosti was told on Monday in the Public Relations Centre of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the Iranians were detained the day before by the officers of the Pacific Frontier Department of the FSB Division for the Maritime Territory.

When examining the motor ship Imperatorskaya Gavan, three men were discovered in a specially equipped cache . They did not have any documents on them and said they were Iranians," the spokesman for the Centre specified.

The case of the detained is being investigated.

According to the Centre's data, within the past twenty-four hours altogether 205 persons, who tried to leave the country, were detained.
