    MOSCOW, January 8 (RIA Novosti) - 543 terrorism-related crimes, including 351 terrorist acts were perpetrated in Chechnya in 2003, the republic's interior minister Alu Alkhanov said.

    In his words, "the number of terrorism-related crimes is still large. Grozny remains the center of subversive activity. In this city a bit less than a half of all terrorist acts registered in the republic were committed." Acts of terror were registered in the Grozny, Gudermes, Urus-Martan, Achkhoi Martan, Nozhai Yurt, Sunzhensky districts.

    "In all cases militants aim at authorities, law enforcement bodies as well as persons collaborating with us. Criminals killed 140 interior affairs bodies officers, wounded 266; 11 are missing," the minister said.

    Alkhanov stressed the Interior Ministry and the FSB worked out and agreed a joint plan to counter terrorism and extremism.

    In 2003, in the course of joint operations over 60 terrorist acts were exposed. "Terrorist acts' detection in comparison with 2002 increased," the Chechen Interior Minister said.

    At the same time, the minister said no terrorist acts were detected in the Gudermes, Nozhai Yurt, Vedeno, Sunzhensky and Naursky districts. "Due measures have been taken to this effect," he stressed.
