MOSCOW, January 6, 2004. /RIA Novosti/ -- Everyone in Georgia wants to improve relations with Russia, Georgian ambassador to Russia Zurab Abashidze said on Tuesday in a live interview with the Echo of Moscow radio station.

"Everyone in Georgia wants our relations to improve drastically, and there are all reasons for it to happen this year," he said.

Winner of the Georgian presidential elections Mikhail Saakashvili named improvement of relations with Russia a priority in the country's foreign policy, the ambassador recalled. The new authorities in the country have "a will to improve mutual relations," he emphasized.

It will be easier for Russia to work with the new generation of Georgian politicians, as they do not have a burden of personal resentment and mistakes, Abashidze pointed out.

The Georgian authorities propose to discuss the mistakes of previous years, he recalled. "Only a self-critical analysis can help us to find ways out of the most difficult situations, such as the conflict in Abkhazia," he said.

However, Russia also has "to abandon the policy of double standards in the Abkhazian conflicts," Abashidze underlined.

The ambassador also spoke in favour of signing a framework agreement on friendship and strategic partnership in the first half of 2004.
