RUSSIA TOUGHENS CONTROL OVER ARRIVALS FROM CHINA DUE TO SARS

MOSCOW, January 6, 2003. /RIA Novosti/ -- The State Sanitary Epidemiological Service intends to toughen control over arrivals from China due to cases of SARS reported there, RIA Novosti learned from the committee's press service on Tuesday.

According to the World Health Organization, China continues registering cases of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

"Due to the threat of SARS import to Russian territory Russian first deputy health minister, chief sanitary doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko has sent a letter to heads of state epidemiological centres and heads of administrative healthcare bodies in constituent members of the Russian Federation," the press service reported.

He proposes "to carry out additional coaching of medical personnel on the order of action when diagnosing SARS and at border checkpoints, to toughen control over arrivals from China," the committee pointed out.
