IRAN WELCOMES ADOPTION OF CONSTITUTION OF POST-TALIBAN AFGHANISTAN

TEHERAN, January 6, 2004. /RIA Novosti correspondent Nikolai Terekhov/ -- Iran welcomes the successful completion of Loya Jirga ("Grand Assembly" in Pushtu, a traditional tribal institution of the Afghans, which because of the absence of an elected parliament was reanimated as a pre-parliament) and adoption of Afghanistan's constitution, the Iranian Foreign Ministry's official representative Hamid Reza Asefi announced on Tuesday.

The Iranian diplomat confirmed his country's full support and assistance to the temporary Afghani government and said that "Teheran is ready to render assistance to preserve peace and stability on Afghani territory, as well as to restore the country as soon as possible." After continuous arguments and coordination of different clauses Loya Jirga ratified the country's constitution on Sunday in the edition supported by incumbent head of the temporary administration Hamid Karzai and by the so-called party of technocrats, adherents of the secular form of government: Afghanistan is proclaimed a presidential republic (the post of Prime Minister is abolished, which is an innovation for Afghanistan).
