MAKHACHKALA, January 5th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - The Daghestani (a Russian republic in the North Caucasus bordering on Chechnya) Prosecutor's Office has refused to confirm the elimination of militant gang leader Ruslan Gelayev.

Arrested militants from a gang, which infiltrated Daghestan on December 15th, told federals about the elimination of Ruslan Gelayev, the leader of a major gang in Chechnya.

"According to one of the versions, Gelayev was in the Tsumtinsky district of Daghestan," the republic's prosecutors said. There is no reliable information about his death yet, but facts are being verified.

Gelayev's elimination can be established only after the bodies of militants killed in Daghestan are identified, the source in the Daghestani prosecutor's office said.
