GEORGIAN WOULD-BE PRESIDENT SAAKASHVILI: BIOGRAPHY

TBILISI, January 5th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - According to the Georgian voter opinion polls, Mikhail Saakashvili is a doubtless leader in the presidential race. Exit polls conducted by the US Global Strategy Group company suggest that Saakashvili has garnered 85.6% of votes.

Mikhail Saakashvili was born in Tbilisi on December 21, 1967.

In 1992 he graduated from the faculty of international law of Kiev Institute of International Relations. In 1993 he got a diploma of Strasbourg Human Rights Institute. In 1994 he got an MA degree in New York's Columbia University. In 1995 he got a degree in the George Washington University.

Saakashvili also studied in the Academy of European Law in Florence and the Hague Academy of International Law. He worked in the Georgian State Human Rights Committee (1992) in the Human Rights Institute of Norway.

He was a Georgian parliamentarian (1995-1999, 1999-2000), chairman of the parliamentary committee for constitutional, legal issues and legality (1995-1998). Saakashvili chaired the parliamentary faction Union of Citizens (1998-1999). He also was Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2000), and Georgian Justice Minister (2000-2001).

In 2002 Saakashvili formed a political organisation, National Movement.

He is married (to Sandra Rulofs, b. 1968) and has a son, Eduard, 8.

His hobby is football and journalism.
