Bennington's death is believed to have been caused by suicide, TMZ reported. According to law enforcement officials he hung himself at his home in Palos Verdes Estates in the Los Angeles County, where he was found Thursday morning just before 9 a.m.

The Linkin Park singer, who was married twice, leaves behind six children.

Fellow band member, Mike Shinoda, is the first of the American group to respond to the reports.

Having struggled with drugs and alcohol for years, Bennington noted that in the past he considered committing suicide due to the child abuse he endured by an older male.

Ironically enough, he was close friends with Audioslave and Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who hung himself at the age of 52 in his MGM Grand Detroit hotel room back in May. Upon learning of Cornell's death, the rock singer wrote an open letter to Cornell recalling the impact his friend had on him.

Bennington's band took fame from a series of hits that include "Faint," "In the End" and "Crawling."
