UN Security Council Formally Recommends Antonio Guterres for Secretary-General
14:45 GMT 06.10.2016 (Updated: 16:07 GMT 06.10.2016) The United Nations Security Council formally approved the nomination of Antonio Guterres, former Portuguese prime minister and chief of the UN Refugee Agency, as the next UN secretary-general, Security Council President Vitaly Churkin said in a press conference on Thursday.
"The Security Council…recommends to the General Assembly that Mr. Antonio Guterres be appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations for a term of office from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021," Churkin stated.
