MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti) – A 12-year-old Russian boy has confessed to stealing the equivalent of $500 from his great-grandmother, using at least $150 of the money to buy candy, police said in a statement.

Shocked that her pension money had gone missing, the 78-year-old alerted police, and a team of investigators came to her apartment in Artyom, a town about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Vladivostok, to figure out what happened.

Soon after, the boy admitted to the authorities that he had been taking cash – 15,000 rubles in total – from her secret hiding place over the course of several months.

He said that on a recent day he had taken a 5,000 ruble bank note ($150) from the stash and spent it on candy, police said in the statement, posted on their website.

Police have decided not to open a criminal case because the boy is under the age of criminal liability, the statement said. However, a commission on underage issues will decide on possible state-imposed disciplinary measures.
