IZHEVSK, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – A municipal lawmaker in Russia’s Urals region has been detained after drug police found over 4 kilograms of cannabis split between his car and a garage where he was allegedly packaging the drugs with an associate, regional narcotics officials said Wednesday, adding that both men had been high at the time.

Some 1.9 kilograms of cannabis were found in the trunk of the lawmaker’s Land Cruiser Prado, while another 2.3 kilograms were in a bag that the garage owner “took for himself,” according to a statement released by the Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) of the Udmurt Republic. Officials did not give the men’s names and it was not immediately clear whether the second man had also been detained.

The lawmaker is a member of the local legislature in Mozhga, a town of about 50,000 in the Udmurt Republic, also known as Udmurtia, the statement said.

It added that he had 200 grams of “marijuana with bits of cannabis” and 1.4 grams of “ready-to-use” drugs in the car’s interior, and that the packaged cannabis plants “were tied in bundles. They were obviously being prepared for further drying.”

Possession and use of cannabis is illegal in Russia, punishable by a fine or prison term depending on the amount of the drugs found.
