Armenia and Azerbaijan declared on April 2 a sharp escalation of the situation in the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh area. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported, in particular, about the shelling by the Armenian armed forces, and the Armenian Defense Ministry said about offensive actions from the Azerbaijani side.

The Armenian Defense Ministry said in turn about the "active offensive actions taken by the opponent on the contact line of Karabakh and Azerbaijani forces in the night between April 1 and 2."

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in 1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought to secede from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, before proclaiming independence after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. The conflict escalated further in September 2015, with the sides blaming one another for violating the truce.
