US Scrambled Fighters Twice This Month Over Russian Military Drill Near Hawaii, Reports Suggest
12:12 GMT 23.06.2021 (Updated: 18:37 GMT 15.01.2023) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States has launched fighter jets twice this month in Hawaii in response to Russia conducting a massive drill off the coast of the archipelago, ABC News reported on Wednesday, citing a defense official.
The official told the broadcaster that F-22 Raptors had been sent out for patrol from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on 13 and 18 June.
The official noted that Russian aircraft never approached closer than 150 miles.
Another defense official said the Russian bombers did not enter the air defense identification zone, a part of the international airspace in which aircraft are required to comply with a country's identification procedures.
Russia's Pacific Fleet is reported to have held military drills in the central Pacific earlier in the month, with about twenty submarines and surface vessels, as well as anti-submarine aircraft, participating.
