Under the new strategy for Afghanistan, President Donald Trump intends to deploy a sufficient number of troops to the country who will also be aided by additional air power, US Vice President Mike Pence said in an interview on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Contrary to previous reports, Trump said the United States would not reveal the number of troops or any future military action plans in Afghanistan.

"What the president has decided is to deploy a sufficient number of troops at the brigade level in Afghanistan to assist the Afghans who are in the lead," Pence told the Today Show.

Pence said the US troops will assist the Afghan authorities in their fight against the Taliban, the Haqqani network, al-Qaeda and the Daesh terror groups.

"Also, the president is going to make available additional air combat resources using those brigade level personnel to call in that air power," Pence stated.

Trump's strategic guidance for South Asia unveiled on Monday states that US support in Afghanistan is not unlimited and will not serve as a "blank check." The guidance repudiates nation-building and instead expands the US troops' authority to target terrorists in Afghanistan.
