Joint US-South Korean Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) military exercises will start in South Korea on Monday and will continue through August 31.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the US Department of Defense, these annual computer-simulated drills are aimed at boosting combat readiness, protecting the region and ensuring stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The exercise is to be attended by 17,500 US troops, staff from the South Korean military and government services and United Nations Command forces from seven countries, including Australia, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Commenting on the upcoming drills, the North Korean state newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported that the drills would contribute to escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
