Two Indian soldiers, including an army major, were killed in clashes with militants in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, local media reported on Thursday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the Shopian district, the NDTV broadcaster reported citing a police official. Militants reportedly attacked a group of Indian servicemen who had received intelligence data about the terrorists’ presence in the area. The attack left one junior soldier injured.

A search operation is reportedly underway.

Another incident occurred in early hours of Thursday in the Gopalpora village in the Kulgam district. During the attack, Indian security forces killed two militants involved in a May attack on a bank cash van, which left seven people dead.

Kashmir has been disputed between India and Pakistan since partition of India in 1947. The two countries have gone through three wars over the region, but the conflict was never resolved.

A significant escalation of tensions in the region occurred in July 2016 after Indian security forces killed Burhan Wani, the leader of a separatist group.
