US Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls has been awarded a $1.5 billion contract for the procurement of the detail design and construction of USS Fort Lauderdale Landing Dock Ship, the Pentagon said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The firm has won a $1,463,276,000 modification to a previously awarded contract for the procurement of the detail design and construction of USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28).

"Work to be performed is the detail design and construction of LPD 28, the 12th ship in the LPD 17 amphibious transport dock ship class," the release stated on Monday.

Dock landing ships are used to transport and land US Marines and their equipment and supplies by air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles supported by helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft like the Harrier and F-35.

Work will be performed in the US states of Mississippi, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Georgia and is expected to be completed by October 2021.
