MOSCOW (Sputnik) — After liberating Aleppo the Syrian army will start clearing from terrorists settlements to the west of the city, a military source told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"In the coming days the Syrian army will be liberating villages to the west of the city [Aleppo]," the source said.

He stressed that the Syrian army was currently involved in liberating Sukkari and Salah Addin neighborhoods of Aleppo.

The source added that civilians were asking the military to eliminate terrorists that were still active in some neighborhoods.

He pointed out that, according to local activists, about 100,000 residents of Aleppo were waiting for the end of the smaller regional occupations.

Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground in Syria, which has been in the state of civil war since 2011. Eastern Aleppo is currently encircled by government troops, and the fighting between government forces and militants has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.

Earlier in the day, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian authorities were controlling over 98 percent of the territory of Aleppo, with militants presented in less than 3 square kilometers (1.1 square mile).
