    Makin Island Amphibious Group Joins US 5th Fleet - Navy

    The US Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) has rejoined operations in the Persian Gulf region following a deployment in the Indo-Asia -Pacific area, the US Navy announced in a press release on Wednesday.

    WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The fleet supports combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

    "While in US 5th Fleet, the Navy and Marine Corps team will support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts to ensure the free flow of commerce, freedom of navigation, and regional security," the release stated.

    The Makin Island ARG includes the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, a sea-based air and ground task force comprised of a ground combat element, air and medical support services, the release noted.

    While with US 7th Fleet in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, the Makin Island ARG and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit participated in bilateral training exercises and conducted operations, the release added.
