The United States and Russia need to look into updating memorandum of understanding for flights deconfliction in Syria amid deployment of new defense systems to the region, US Central Command Commander Gen. Joseph Votel stated on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Recently, Russia deployed the S-300 air defense system in Syria's port city of Tartus in addition to S-400 currently stationed at Russia's Hmeymim airbase in the Latakia province.

"As we move forward, and additional systems, other systems are introduced into the area, that highlights the importance of this effort and means that we have to continue to stay in a dialogue on this, we have to look at how we update our deconfliction methods to make sure that everybody can stay safe," Votel said.
