WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Vice President Joe Biden met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in New York on Wednesday where they agreed to intensify cooperation on issues related to the South China Sea, the White House said in a press release.
"Vice President Joe Biden met today in New York with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and reaffirmed the unwavering strength of the US-Japan alliance," the release stated on Wednesday evening. "Both leaders agreed to increase coordination on East China Sea and South China Sea issues."
Biden and Abe, the release continued, also shared views on the importance of sustaining an open, rules-based order in the Asian-Pacific region.
On Monday, US President Barack Obama said at the UN General Assembly that disputes in the South China Sea should be resolved peacefully.
