Several hundred T-90 tanks will be modernized in the near future, the Russian Defense Ministry’s chief of armor and vehicle department told Sputnik on Friday.

KUBINKA (Sputnik) – The T-90 is a third-generation Russian battle tank that entered service in 1993. The tank is a moderate variation of the T-72B and incorporates many features found on the T-80U.

"This is the Proryv-3 program, we have already discussed it at the forum, this tank will be even better than the existing T-90," Alexander Shevchenko said on the sidelines of the Army-2016 military expo.

Has Russia's T-90 Tank Really Made TOW Missiles Obsolete in Syria?
According to the official, the Russian army will receive more than 300 modernized T-72-B3 tanks.

"This vehicle is promising, it will continue to develop, the armed forces will receive more than 300 T-72B3 tanks in the near future," he added.

The T-90 has its origins in a Soviet-era program aimed at developing a singular replacement for the T-64, T-72 and T-80 series of main battle tanks. The T-72 platform was selected as the basis for the new generation of tank due to its cost-effectiveness, simplicity and automotive qualities. The tank was chosen to protect Russia’s airbase in Syria as it is ideal for defending a stationary object in a desert environment.
