MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Russian diplomat, Moscow is paying attention to the findings of Western studies which suggest that gradual strengthening of East Asia as the center of economic and political influence will surely be followed by the strengthening of military influence, which would in turn seriously distort the already existing picture of the world and thus Russia must be prepared to counter China.
"Of course, this is a very dangerous line," Grushko said on the TV channel Rossiya 24, noting that Russia opposed such conclusions.
"This competition will overturn strategic stability and there is no other way except a politico-diplomatic one and except for joint initiatives with China, which we offer at various venues."
According to Grushko, the alliance between Russia and China is "a political alliance, which aims to ensure that the danger of the arms race and the arms race itself on a global scale does not acquire an uncontrollable character."
On June 5, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said that Russia is building up its military cooperation with the Asia Pacific nations, including China, in order to strengthen peace and stability in the region.
