NATO will take further steps aiming to increase the Alliance's military activity at the upcoming summit in Warsaw as well as to strengthen its deterrence capabilities, NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said Monday.

LONDON (Sputnik) — The Warsaw NATO Summit 2016 will take place on July 8 and 9.

"The Alliance is already reinforcing our collective defence. We have increased our military activities in the eastern part of our Alliance, with more planes in the air, more ships at sea and more exercises on the ground – and I expect our leaders to take further steps at our Summit in Warsaw," Vershbow said at the UK Parliament.

According to Vershbow, strengthening of NATO "deterrence and defence" will become another important theme for the discussion.

Since 2014, NATO has been building up its military presence in Europe, particularly in eastern European countries bordering Russia, using Moscow's alleged interference in Ukraine as a pretext for the move.

Moscow has repeatedly dismissed the Ukraine-related accusations leveled at it, warning that increased NATO activities near the country's borders could undermine regional and global stability.
