The United States deployed its initial batch of mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles (MRAP) to Egypt to fight terrorism and bolster stability, the US embassy in Cairo said in a statement on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The delivery is the first batch of 762 vehicles that the United States is transferring to Egypt, according to Daily News Egypt.

"US delivers first batch of MRAP tanks to help Egypt [to] combat terrorism and promote stability," the statement, posted on Twitter, noted.

Egypt is fighting an Islamist insurgency in northern Sinai since the army, led by President Abdel Fattah Sisi, overthrew then Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
