The US Air Force awarded defense giants Lockheed Martin and Raytheon an almost two-thirds of a billion dollar contract to buy more Paveway II laser-guided bombs, the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – According to reports in local defense journals, the US armed forces has been running short of precision-guided munitions because of the continuing demand for them in air strikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria, and in air operations by Saudi Arabia, a US ally against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

“Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control [in] Archibald, Pennsylvania and Raytheon Missile System [in] Tucson, Arizona have been awarded a combined… $649.7 million… for Paveway II production,” the release, issued on Monday, stated.

The GBU-12 Paveway II is a US aerial laser-guided bomb, based on the Mark-82 500-pound general-purpose bomb and equipped with a nose-mounted laser seeker and fins for guidance.
