Iranian MPs have approved a plan for government funding of the country’s defense complex. The bill obliges the government to allocate at least 5% of the total budget (more than $326 billion) to strengthen Iran’s potential defense expenses.

It is expected that the program will modernize the entire infrastructure of the defense industry; it will create new special defense centers in the potential danger zones. It will help in equipping with modern weapons and in building defense systems with improved armament of ground forces of Iran.

In an interview with Sputnik, Advisor to the Chairman of the Iranian parliament on international issues, Hossein Sheikholeslam explained that this move should not be considered as part of the Iranian missile program or military buildup.

“Today we are faced with a threat of terrorism unleashed by modern weapons that are in the hands of the US and its allies in the Middle East region.

“The Pentagon continues to supply weapons to its allies and our enemies in the region for a certain price and even free of charge. Moreover, Israel, under the pretext of arms sale to some Arab countries, receives some of the most powerful weapons from the United States; such weapons do not exist in other countries of our region. Therefore, has two main regional enemies ‘Zionist regime’ and terrorism.”

The advisor added that in order to protect its territory and security of the country in the face of these two threats, Iran needs to strengthen its defense capability to balance the forces in the region.

“It should be emphasized that the approved budget, in terms of percentage and money, is in fact a tiny comparison to the huge financial resources that are spent by our neighbors, especially the enemies. In particular, Israel, which invests huge amounts of money just for its military-defense complex,” Sheikholeslam said.
