WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes in Syria and Iraq against the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, since the summer of 2014.
"Near Mosul, nine strikes struck an ISIL [Daesh] staging area, an ISIL-used power plant and four separate ISIL tactical units, destroying two ISIL assembly areas, three ISIL supply caches, an ISIL mortar system and two ISIL vehicles and denying ISIL access to terrain," the statement noted on Wednesday.
In Syria, the coalition carried out three airstrikes against Daesh fighting positions in two cities, destroying an artillery piece in Manbij and fighting positions near Mara.
On Monday, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced the United States will be sending at least 200 more advisers along with mobile rocket launchers and Apache gunship helicopters to back up the Iraqi drive to retake the city of Mosul from the terror group.
