Turkey and Russia continue their cooperation in the sphere of maritime safety, despite the tensions between the two countries, the commander of Turkish Naval Forces said Wednesday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — Russian-Turkish relations deteriorated following the downing of the Russian Su-24 aircraft by a Turkish F-16 fighter in Syria on November 24, 2015. In response to this "stab in the back," as it was described by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moscow imposed a number of restrictive measures on Turkey.

"Despite the fact that Russia creates different problems for us, we continue the cooperation [in the maritime sphere]. It will produce its results. At the moment the maritime safety could be guaranteed only by joint efforts," Adm. Bulent Bostanoglu said, as quoted by Hurriyet newspaper.

He added that the problems in this sphere should be solved only within the framework of international law.
