Violence Erupts as Islamic State Rises (1881)

The US Department of Defense intends to continue its assistance to the vetted Syrian opposition in its fight against the Daesh, Pentagon’s spokesperson Adrian Rankine-Galloway told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported citing US and Mideast officials that the CIA and its regional partners are preparing Plan B in Syria that includes delivery of various types of anti-aircraft weapons to Syrian rebels.

"We continue to support vetted Syrian opposition forces that are taking the fight to ISIL [Daesh] in a host of ways and we'll continue to monitor the situation on the ground and enable those local motivated, capable forces fighting ISIL," Rankine-Galloway commented on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, CIA spokesperson Ryan Trapani told Sputnik it would decline to comment on the reports of the so-called Plan B.

Plan A refers to the current cessation of hostilities between Syrian government forces and rebel groups, with the exception of terrorist networks operating in the country. The ceasefire took effect on February 27, and has been described as largely holding despite violations.

On February 23, the day after Russia and the United States negotiated the ceasefire, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said the United States was "not ruling out a Plan B" in case the truce did not hold. Moscow questioned US commitment to the cessation of hostilities with its contingency plan.
