The North Korean nuclear program and an alleged hydrogen bomb test seriously threaten security and stability on the Korean peninsula and global non-proliferation regime, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Wednesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — "The North Korean nuclear program and repeated nuclear tests are serious threats to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and an attack on the global regime of non-proliferation," Steinmeier said.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said that Germany urged Pyongyang to come to the negotiating table on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

"By the end of the day, German government's position will be delivered to the North Korean leadership," Schaefer said at a briefing.

According to Schaefer, the German foreign minister has already discussed the issue with his Japanese counterpart. The spokesman did not rule out that a similar discussion will be held with the Chinese side.

Earlier in the day, Pyongyang claimed it had carried out the first test of a hydrogen bomb.

In 2005, North Korea declared itself a nuclear power, and conducted several nuclear weapon tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013, sparking concerns in the international community.
