Iraqi-Kurdish special forces with assistance from US commandos raided a town in Daesh territory, killing several militants with their field commander and liberating Kurdish soldiers from captivity, local media reported late on Saturday.

Kurdish special operations’ soldiers backed by an unspecified American unit attacked a Daesh court in the town of Riyadh, west of Kirkuk, at 11 pm on Friday, Brigadier Sarhad Qadir of the Kirkuk police told Rudaw media outlet.

Commandos were reportedly using gunship helicopters for transportation. The combined force stormed the court, eliminating an unknown number of Daesh militants along with a field commander while capturing others, Qadir said. The goal of the operation was to free Kurdish soldiers held there in captivity, according to Rudaw.

In October, a similar operation took place in the neighboring town of Hawija, where around 70 hostages were reportedly rescued by Kurdish and US commandos. The operation claimed the life of an American soldier, which was officially confirmed by the US military.
