Turkish Troops Deployed to Iraq (83)

In a move to ease the tension with Baghdad over the deployment of Turkish troops to northern Iraq, Turkey has been working to bring the training camp under the status of the coalition forces, sources told Hürriyet Daily News.

It is noted that the Turkish government is holding intensive talks with the authorities in the US and UK. Ankara also plans to hold talks with Baghdad.

Earlier, it was reported that Iraq has urged the UN Security Council to demand that Turkish troops withdraw from Iraqi territory.

Turkey sent troops and tanks to a base in northern Iraq last week setting off an angry diplomatic row with Baghdad.

Iraqi authorities said that under the pretext of training Kurdish fighters Turkey sent troops to Iraq consisting of 900 people.

Following this move, Iraq filed a complaint with the UN, but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called it an “unfair step.”
