BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Monday for Russia to target the Islamic State (Daesh in Arabic), a jihadist group banned in Russia, in Syria.

"I urge Russia to play a constructive role in Syria by targeting ISIL, our common enemy," Stoltenberg said at a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Stoltenberg issued a similar call for Russia to be "guided by an overarching goal" of defeating Daesh after NATO’s North Atlantic Council following the downing of a Russian Su-24 jet by a Turkish fighter last week.
