Russian Su-24 Jet Downed Over Syria (276)

The Turkish General Staff said Wednesday it had shared data on circumstances surrounding the downing of a Russian warplane with Russian military attache in Ankara and expressed readiness for further information exchange.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — According to the Turkey's military, the Russian military attache was invited to the General Staff headquarters on November 24 and November 25, and was informed in detail about the incident.

"We answered all questions with the use of flight charts and radar data…In addition, the Turkish side held phone talks with military authorities in Moscow and expressed readiness for any kind of cooperation," the General Staff said in a statement.

On Tuesday, a Russian Su-24 bomber aircraft was downed by an air-to-air missile while carrying out precision strikes against terrorists in northern Syria. The missile was fired by a Turkish F-16 fighter in response to alleged violation of the Turkish airspace by the Russian jet.

One of the pilots of the downed Su-24 was killed by fire from the ground after ejecting, while the co-pilot was rescued and returned to the Russian airbase near Latakia.

The Su-24 incident also claimed the life of a Russian naval infantry soldier, who was killed in the rescue operation.
