WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is spending almost $100 million on a new secure encryption program from Northrop Grumman Systems, the US Department of Defense announced in the daily announcements of contracts.

“Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation… has been awarded a maximum $99,900,000… contract for Programmable Inline Encryption Devices (PIEDs)… to process classified messaging traffic via the Joint Battle Command-Platform (JBC-P) program,” the Defense Department said on Monday afternoon.

The five-year contract is scheduled to be completed on November 15, 2020, the announcement added.

The Defense Department is investing heavily in next generation encryption systems to keep ahead of perceived technological advances in the field by China and other nations, top military officials have said.
