Montenegro’s likely accession to NATO will be an important contribution to regional stability, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Montenegro, which declared its independence in 2006, expects an invitation to join the alliance by the end of 2016. In order to obtain the invitation, the country’s authorities have launched active work on the diplomatic front and a campaign to increase public support of accession to NATO within the country.

"I have congratulated the country that it is very-very likely, or it is already confirmed that there will be an invitation by NATO, that Montenegro might become a member of this international organization, which I think is a future success, is a very important contribution to the stability in the region," Hahn said at a joint press conference with Interior Minister of Montenegro Rasko Konjevic, following their meeting at the European Commission.

In the past few weeks, Montenegro saw a string of anti-government protests, organized by the Democratic Front opposition coalition, demanding among other requests that Montenegro stays out of the US-led NATO military bloc.
