The US Navy has ordered a $24.1 million contract for reactor plant planning yard services.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Navy has ordered a $24.1 million contract for reactor plant planning yard services for nuclear-powered submarines and support shipyard services, the General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation said in a press release.

“[Electric Boat will] perform the functions of the planning yard for reactor plants and associated portions of the propulsion plants for nuclear-powered submarines,” the release stated on Tuesday.

Most of the work for the project will be performed in Groton, Connecticut, but 5 percent of the work will take place in Charleston, South Carolina, the press release added.

The contract is expected to be completed by September 2016.

General Dynamics Electric Boat is a subsidiary of the General Dynamics Corporation and has been the main builder of submarines for the US Navy for more than a century.

The company constructed the Ohio, Los Angeles, Seawolf and Virginia-class nuclear submarines.
