WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States does not want to engage in a proxy war with Russia in Syria through the two powers’ conflicting support for batting forces in the country, State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Thursday.

“Everyone should take a step back here. A proxy war with Russia is not an outcome anybody wants,” Kirby said in a press briefing.

Kirby added that a better deconfliction is needed in Syria.
