On Monday, President Francois Hollande announced that France would start inspection flights over Syria before initiating targeted airstrikes against the Islamic State jihadist group.

PARIS (Sputnik) — Two Rafale jets conducted France's first intelligence flights over the Syrian territory on Tuesday, French media reported.

The aircraft, equipped with instruments to collect digital images, flew above the Persian Gulf at dawn, BFMTV television channel reported on Tuesday, quoting a source in the French Defense Ministry.

France is already conducting airstrikes in Iraq against ISIL in support of the US-led combined joint task force-operation, dubbed Inherent Resolve.
