"In the last 18 months we have really started to train for what we call a hybrid warfare, which is what actually the war I consider Russia is in fact conducting… we are in the process of increasing our capabilities to do this,” Odierno said.

The general added he views Russia as the United States’ “most dangerous” threat.

“I think what we have to do over the next several years is to continue to increase that [deterrent] so the risk goes up for anybody who might considers conducting operations in Eastern Europe," Odierno added.

Washington has been accusing Russia of conducting a mix of irregular and conventional warfare alongside information operations in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow has consistently refuted claims of being involved in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
