The military purchase includes 1,000 tube-launched TOW anti-tank missiles and 500 TOW bunker buster missiles.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has approved a possible $245 million military sale to Lebanon to provide TOW anti-tanks and anti-ground force missiles to Beirut, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in an announcement on Wednesday.

“The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Lebanon for TOW 2A Missiles and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $245 million,” DSCA said.

The military purchase includes 1,000 tube-launched TOW anti-tank missiles and 500 TOW bunker buster missiles. TOW missile is a multi-use battlefield weapon effective against tanks and vehicles, ground forces and helicopters.

The sale comes as Lebanon experiences spill-over from the conflict in Syria, and Lebanon’s Shiite militia Hezbollah fighting rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The sectarian nature of the conflict in Syria has heightened tensions in multi-sectarian Lebanon, where the military is viewed as above sectarianism and politics, and is widely regarded as the most trusted institution.
