German lawmaker from the leftist Die Linke party Alexander Neu claims that German intelligence agency BND needs a political will to become independent from NSA.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – German intelligence agency BND needs a political will to become independent from US National Security Agency (NSA), German lawmaker from the leftist Die Linke party Alexander Neu told Sputnik.

“As for technical reasons, independence is always possible. But it is politically undesirable. There should be a political rethinking in Germany,” Neu said.

The lawmaker added that the German secret services were established in 1945 with US support, which makes them “transatlantic-oriented.”

In April, an espionage scandal broke out in Germany when local media unveiled that the BND had provided technical assistance to the NSA in spying on European targets, including top political figures and corporations.

BND is believed to have spied on some 800,000 IP addresses, phone numbers and email addresses at the request of the US intelligence agency.
