MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - Chinese, Australian and US troops have gathered in Australia's Northern Territory to take part in Kowari 14, the first joint military exercise among the participants, a statement published on the Australian Defense Ministry's website read.

"Exercise KOWARI 14 will provide participants with an understanding of the basic principles, procedures, techniques and equipment that can enhance survival prospects in the harsh Australian environment," Australian Defense Minister David Johnston said in the statement published Tuesday.

Johnston also stated that the drills represented the willingness of China, the United States and Australia to cooperate in a number of areas.

According to the statement, five soldiers from the United States and 10 soldiers from China and Australia each will be involved from the beginning, with an additional number of 100 troops to join in later to provide liaison and logistics support.

Talking about the drills, exercise commander Brig. Peter Clay said that "the troops will have to depend on each other absolutely in order to succeed."

The drills, which began Tuesday, will continue until October 25.
