WASHINGTON, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – Airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) militants’ positions in Iraq are extremely effective, Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said.

"The airstrikes that we conducted in support of Mosul Dam operations led to Iraqi forces retaking Mosul Dam. The airstrikes that we took in and around Amirli broke the back of the ISIL forces that were attempting to take Amirli. And now, over the weekend, these airstrikes conducted in support of Haditha Dam ... were tremendously effective," Warren told reporters Monday.

"Certainly, ISIL forces realize that when American airpower is deployed, their chance of survival goes to nil," he added.

Pentagon spokesman also noted, that despite the effectiveness of such airstrikes the IS terrorist group still represents threat.

The Islamic State, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a Sunni jihadist group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories under its control later that month.
