MINSK, January 21 (RIA Novosti) – President  Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday ordered a large-scale surprise inspection of the country’s armed forces, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said.

The main purpose of the inspection is to check the combat readiness of the military personnel and weaponry to respond to potential threats and challenges, the ministry said.

Another key task is to inspect the security and protection of the country’s infrastructure and state borders ahead of the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship to be held in Belarus on May 9-25, according to the military.

The ministry said the inspection involves all levels of military command structure and all branches of the armed forces, as well as territorial troops.

During the inspection, the Belarusian military will carry out operational testing of the Tor-M2 air defense systems, which have been recently delivered to Belarus by Russia, as well as domestically developed and produced Rosa-RB radar designed to detect low-flying  targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles.

“Even despite the fact that the Belarusian army did well last year … we should test the readiness to act in any situation at any time, especially the readiness of uniformed personnel,” Lukashenko said last week at a meeting with State Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Mezhuyev.
