The Defense Ministry is building a six-meter-high, three-kilometer-long dam around a Sukhoi aircraft factory in the far-eastern Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur to protect it from flood water, the ministry said Friday.

MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) – The Defense Ministry is building a six-meter-high, three-kilometer-long dam around a Sukhoi aircraft factory in the far-eastern Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur to protect it from flood water, the ministry said Friday.

Construction work started following a plea for help from the Sukhoi company, the ministry said, adding that the requisite funds and resources had already been provided. The dam requires 55,000 cubic meters of earthwork, the ministry said.

A Sukhoi representative told RIA Novosti that the factory was functioning as normal.

Russia’s federal government is providing 12 billion rubles ($360 million) in aid to parts of the Far East that have been devastated by flash floods, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev said Wednesday.

Trutnev said Tuesday that a further 36,000 people would need to be evacuated from the area as floodwaters continue to rise. He said that almost 16,000 people had already been evacuated and 98,800 people affected by the ongoing flooding of the Amur River. In total there are about 45,000 people taking part in rescue work in flood-hit areas, the deputy prime minister added.
