DOHA (Sputnik) - The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation of the United Arab Emirates (FANR) has issued permission for the launching of the second reactor at the first Arab nuclear power plant "Barakah" located in the UAE, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Tuesday.

The agency said that FANR issued the Operating License for Unit 2 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.

The first reactor was launched last July. A month later, Emirati Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the opening of the NPP. Last November the Nawah Energy Company (Nawah) responsible for the station’s maintenance and exploitation said that the first reactor has reached 80% of its production capacity.

The first Arab nuclear power plant is located 250 km from Abu-Dhabi, the UAE capital. The NPP is expected to provide 25% of the country’s energy needs.
