The port of Beirut is in ruins following a devastating explosion on 4 August. At least 137 people perished and thousands were wounded. Nearly 300,000 local residents were left homeless as huge parts of the Lebanese capital were completely destroyed by the blast and its shockwaves.
The cause of the explosion is being investigated, but preliminary reports suggest that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical, were stored at a port warehouse without due safety measures.
